What to Expect
Meeting Structure
- The book clubs meet once each month and read one book per month.
- Come to the session ready to discuss that month's book.
- Start each session with an invitation for everyone to share a passage or concept that really jumped out for them. (This is one of two around-the-room formalities; otherwise the conversation should be more natural.) Note: If new people are present take a few minutes for everyone to introduce themselves before jumping into the book.
- Once everyone has had the chance to present their highlighted passage or concept a more organic conversation can unfold.
- Conclude with an invitation for everyone to chime in on their main take-away from this session's conversation. (The 2nd around-the-room formality...)
Ground Rules
- Build on each other's ideas and interests. Ask questions of each other and really engage in the exchange.
- Know that sensitive subjects may arise. Don't shrink from those subjects, but do discuss them with respect and appreciation for each other's point of view.
- Start and end sessions on time.
- And most of all have fun!
Locations
Current HAE Book Club Locations
Organize a new HAE Book Club
Don't see any existing locations near you? All Harvard alumni are eligible to organize and host a group. To do so, you will need to create a new Wiki page. We recommend you copy the format and layout from the Cambridge, MA, USA page. To get started, enter the city, state, and country of your club's location in the search box at the left. Then, click the Go button. Then, click Create This Page link.
On the newly created page, please provide the following information:
- City, State, and Country of your Book Club
- Name of the venue where the group will meet (such as Downtown Public Library Reading Room, or XYZ Bookstore Cafe. Please note: private locations, such as your house or office, are not permissible.)
- Specific street address of your venue
- Description of your meeting day and time (such as: 1st Monday of each month, 7pm)
- Exact dates for each event in the series (such as 3/2, 4/6, 5/4)
- Your name (and co-hosts' names, if any)
- Your Harvard school (plus co-hosts)
- Your Year of Harvard Graduation (plus co-hosts)
- Your email address (post.harvard, please. Note: your email address will be displayed so that participants in your Regional Book Club can contact you with questions.)
- At the end of the page, be sure to add [[Category:City]], so your page gets automatically indexed.
